Understanding RAL Colours in Powder Coating

RAL is a colour matching system that assigns a fixed number to a specific colour, so "RAL 9010" means the same white to a manufacturer in Satara, a fabricator in Pune and an architect in Frankfurt. It removes the ambiguity from "off-white" or "light grey", words that mean something slightly different to everyone who reads them.

How the numbering works

RAL Classic is the range used in industrial coating. Each colour has a four-digit number in which the first digit indicates the colour family:

The part most specifications get wrong

A RAL number alone does not fully define a finish. Two coatings can both be genuinely RAL 7035 and look clearly different side by side, because a RAL number specifies hue, not gloss, texture or metallic effect.

A complete colour specification needs four things:

  1. The RAL or NCS number, or a physical sample. A printed chart or a screen render is not a reliable reference, paper and monitors reproduce colour differently from a cured powder film.
  2. The gloss level, as a band. "RAL 7035 at 60 ± 5 GU measured at 60°": not a single figure, which nobody can reliably hit.
  3. The finish type. Smooth, textured, wrinkle, metallic or pearlescent.
  4. The colour tolerance. Expressed as ΔE.

Understanding ΔE

ΔE (delta E) is a single number expressing the total difference between two colours in CIELab space, combining lightness, red–green and blue–yellow differences.

Oracle Industries matches to ΔE ≤ 1.5 (CIELab), measured by spectrophotometer rather than by eye. Minimum order for a custom-matched shade is 100 kg.

How spectrophotometric matching actually works

A spectrophotometer measures how much light a surface reflects at each wavelength across the visible spectrum, producing a numerical fingerprint rather than an opinion. That fingerprint is compared against the target, ΔE is calculated, and the formulation is adjusted and re-measured until it falls inside tolerance.

This matters because visual matching is unreliable in ways that are easy to underestimate. Two samples can match under workshop fluorescent light and differ visibly in daylight: a phenomenon called metamerism, caused by different pigment combinations producing the same apparent colour under one light source but not another. Instrumental matching largely avoids it.

Why batches vary, and how to control it

Even within tolerance, small differences exist between production batches. Sources, in order of impact:

  • Film thickness. Thinner films read lighter, especially in strong colours. This is the largest cause of apparent colour variation, and it is a process issue rather than a material one.
  • Cure variation. Over-cure yellows light shades noticeably.
  • Substrate. At low film build the metal underneath influences the result.
  • Raw material lots. Pigment batches vary slightly; this is what the ΔE tolerance exists to bound.

Practical control: coat one visible assembly from a single batch; hold film thickness within a tight band; retain a reference panel from the approved batch and check against it, not against a printed chart.

Cross-system conversions are approximations, not equivalences. If a brand colour arrives as a Pantone reference, expect to approve a physical sample rather than assume the conversion is exact.

Frequently asked questions

Can any RAL colour be made in powder coating?

Effectively yes across the RAL Classic range, subject to minimum order quantity. Some highly saturated shades, certain oranges and bright reds, need particular pigments and may cost more or need higher film build for opacity.

What is the minimum quantity for a custom colour?

100 kg per shade at Oracle Industries. That reflects the smallest practical extrusion batch that still produces consistent colour.

Can you match a physical sample rather than a RAL number?

Yes, and it is often better. Send a rigid sample at least 50 × 50 mm, unfaded and unhandled. A cured coated panel is ideal; painted card is workable; a photograph is not.

Will my colour fade outdoors?

It depends on chemistry, not on the RAL number. Pure Polyester is UV stable; epoxy and hybrid coatings chalk outdoors regardless of shade. That said, deep reds, oranges and bright yellows are inherently more prone to visible fade because their pigments are less lightfast.

Does gloss level change the colour?

It changes the appearance considerably. The same pigmentation at 90 GU looks deeper and more saturated than at 10 GU. Always specify gloss alongside the RAL number.
