Epoxy Polyester vs Pure Polyester: Which is Right for You?

The short answer: if the part sees daylight, use Pure Polyester. If it does not, Epoxy Polyester is the better value. That one question settles the choice in the large majority of cases, and getting it wrong is the most common and most expensive specification error in powder coating.

The difference in one paragraph

Epoxy Polyester is a hybrid, an epoxy resin cured with a polyester. It inherits epoxy's mechanical strength, adhesion and corrosion resistance, with enough polyester content to improve overbake tolerance and decorative range. Pure Polyester uses a polyester resin cured with TGIC or HAA and contains no epoxy at all. That single compositional difference is what makes one an indoor coating and the other an exterior one.

Why epoxy cannot go outside

The epoxy backbone contains aromatic groups that absorb ultraviolet light. Under sunlight those bonds break at the film surface, the resin degrades, and pigment is left loose and unbound. The finish goes dull, the colour washes out, and a wiped finger comes away powdery. This is chalking.

It is not a defect, not a manufacturing fault, and not something a better epoxy formulation solves. It is the chemistry behaving exactly as epoxy chemistry does. In Indian sunlight a hybrid coating on an exterior part will visibly dull within a single summer, and be noticeably faded within a year.

Polyester resin has no such absorbing groups in its backbone. That is the entire reason Pure Polyester exists as a separate, more expensive product.

Notice what is the same

Corrosion resistance is essentially identical between the two at 500–750 hours, and so is adhesion. People often assume the more expensive polyester must also be the more corrosion-resistant one. It is not. You are paying for UV stability, and nothing else of consequence.

Which means: if the part is genuinely indoors, paying for Pure Polyester buys you nothing. And if corrosion is your real concern rather than sunlight, neither of these is the right answer. Pure Epoxy reaches 1000–1300 hours and Polyurethane ≥1200 hours.

Choose Epoxy Polyester when

  • Electrical enclosures and control panels sited indoors
  • Indoor machinery guarding and frames
  • Hospital and laboratory furniture
  • Shop fittings and display units
  • Cost matters and there is genuinely no UV exposure

Choose Pure Polyester when

  • Anything outdoors, at all, ever
  • Architectural aluminium, facades, window and door systems
  • Railings, gates, fencing, balustrades
  • Outdoor and garden furniture
  • Agricultural and farm equipment
  • Automotive exterior components
  • Solar mounting structures
  • Anything near a window in strong direct sun
  • Anything where colour consistency matters over years

When neither is right

Pure Epoxy: when chemical attack or serious corrosion is the threat and the part is enclosed, buried or indoors. Highest salt spray in our range at 1000–1300 hours. Chalks badly outdoors.

Polyurethane: when appearance is the point, or when humidity is the dominant stress. Best flow-out and gloss depth, and ≥1500 hours humidity resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use epoxy polyester outdoors if I accept some fading?

You can, but understand what you are accepting: not gentle fading but visible dulling within months and chalk on contact within a year. If the part is repainted on a cycle anyway, it can be a defensible economic choice. For anything a customer sees, it is not.

Is pure polyester less durable mechanically?

No. Our tested impact and adhesion figures are equal or slightly better. The trade-off is chemical resistance, not mechanical performance.

What is superdurable polyester?

A polyester formulation with enhanced UV and gloss retention for demanding exterior exposure, typically specified against higher QUALICOAT classes. Available from Oracle on request. We publish no performance figures for it because no laboratory report covers it, we will not specify what we have not tested.

Does a hybrid cure differently?

Both cure at 180–200 °C metal temperature for 10–15 minutes. Pure polyester tolerates overbake slightly better, which matters on mixed loads with varying part masses.

What about TGIC versus TGIC-free?

Both are polyester curing agents. TGIC is restricted in some export markets, which is why TGIC-free HAA formulations exist. Oracle can supply either: if you are exporting to Europe, specify TGIC-free.
